How Community Members Can Help Habitat for Humanity

Not just construction—it’s about community transformation.

While we build and repair homes with local families, we are creating community.  Our volunteers often cite working next to the homebuyers as one of their favorite parts of serving with our Habitat affiliate.  This creates an unmatched joy which becomes contagious and is commonly why so many of our volunteers come back to the build site and ReStore weekly or multiple times per week.  It is also why so many attend Habitat home dedications, which are the ceremonies where we give keys to the new homeowners, celebrate everyone’s hard work, and the families enter their new path of homeownership.

Volunteer Opportunities for Everyone

Habitat welcomes volunteers of all skill levels and abilities. Whether you’re physically able to help on construction sites or have other talents, there’s a place for you:

Construction Support: No experience? No problem!

  • Shadow experienced volunteers
  • Learn basic skills like caulking or nailing
  • Help with site tasks like carrying materials or cleaning up
  • Build community while building homes

ReStore Assistance:

  • Help guide customers
  • Price incoming donated items
  • Support those with physical limitations

Committee Membership:

  • Resource Development – fundraising, marketing
  • Building – construction, planning
  • Family Selection/Support – application processing, homeowner guidance
  • Finance – financial oversight/insight
  • Church Relations – communication, awareness
  • Material and Financial Contributions

Donations Can Take Many Forms!

Monetary Gifts:

  • Monthly contributions from $20
  • Annual donations up to $25,000 or more
  • One-time or recurring support
  • Matching amounts

Material Donations:

  • Dedicate excess construction materials from your current project
  • Resold through ReStore to fund home builds
  • Helpful for companies with surplus supplies

Professional Skill Contributions…

Professionals can make a meaningful impact by donating their expertise in various fields such as electrical work, roofing, real estate, engineering, concrete work, and insulation. Contributions in areas like drywall, plumbing, excavation, paving, landscaping, accounting, and finish carpentry are also invaluable. Additionally, advocating for affordable housing plays a crucial role in supporting Habitat for Humanity’s mission.

Changing the Policy…

Support policy changes by participating in legislative events, writing advocacy letters, providing testimony, and raising awareness about the housing needs of rural communities.

Your contribution, big or small, helps build stronger communities!

Transforming Lives Through Housing

News

A Strategic Approach to Affordable Housing

Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity doesn’t just build houses—we build communities and futures. Our model goes beyond traditional construction by:

  • Requiring partner families to contribute 500 “sweat equity” hours toward their home’s construction
  • Offering affordable (currently zero-interest) mortgages tailored to families’ actual income levels
  • Families demonstrate housing need during the application process
  • Connection to our service area (Newberg, Sherwood, Dundee, Dayton, and St. Paul) is required for families to qualify – such as current residence, school, or place of work
  • Focusing on sustainable, energy-efficient home design and features

Economic Impact

By creating affordable homeownership opportunities, Habitat helps:

  • Stabilize family finances
  • Reduce generational poverty cycles
  • Increase community economic resilience
  • Provide safe, dignified housing for working families

Local Success Stories

In the Newberg area, Habitat has successfully housed 30 families in the past decade. These aren’t just structures—they’re foundations for family stability and community growth.  Family sizes have ranged from one to six-person households.  We routinely hear stories from our Habitat homeowners that they have higher educational outcomes, such as adults who can afford to go back to school and increase their skillset to advance in their careers or children who are the first in their family’s history to attend college.  Going into the future, we hope to gather even more stories of how families are changed from generation to generation.

Addressing Unique Regional Challenges

Oregon’s housing market presents unique obstacles:

  • High land costs
  • Limited affordable housing stock
  • Complex zoning regulations
  • Economic disparities between agricultural and tech-centered communities

Habitat navigates these challenges through strategic partnerships with local governments, businesses, and community organizations.

Looking Forward

As Oregon’s housing landscape continues evolving, Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity remains committed to its core mission: providing safe, decent, and affordable housing that empowers families and strengthens communities.

Building Homes & Hope

News

How Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity Makes a Difference

At Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, decent place to live. As part of a global nonprofit organization grounded in Christian principles, we’re dedicated to putting God’s love into action by building homes, communities, and hope. Whether we’re constructing new houses, renovating existing ones, or advocating for fair housing policies, our mission is clear: eliminate substandard housing and provide families with the opportunity to live in dignity.

Our Mission:

Building Homes and Changing Lives

Habitat for Humanity was founded on a simple, powerful conviction – that every person deserves a place to call home. Since our inception, we’ve worked tirelessly to build and preserve homes both locally and around the world. Our volunteers are the heart of this mission, offering their time and skills to make it all possible. From construction workers and skilled tradespeople to students and retirees, our volunteers come from all walks of life, united by a shared desire to make a difference.

As a volunteer, you’ll find yourself working on a wide range of tasks, from constructing houses to assisting with administrative duties. You might find yourself recruiting new volunteers, seeking donations, or even presenting to local groups about our work. The opportunities to get involved are endless – and every hour you give helps us move one step closer to our goal: eliminating substandard housing for good.

The Habitat ReStore:

Where Shopping Gives Back

If you’re looking for a way to support our mission beyond volunteering, the Habitat ReStore is the perfect place. The ReStore is a nonprofit home improvement store where you can purchase new and gently used furniture, appliances, building materials, and home goods – all at a fraction of retail prices. But here’s the best part: every dollar spent at the ReStore goes directly to funding our mission of building homes and empowering families in need.

Whether you’re shopping for a new dining table, donating gently used items from your home, or volunteering your time, you’re helping to build homes and create hope for families in our community. The ReStore is not just a store; it’s a vital part of our effort to eliminate poverty housing and provide local families with the tools they need to succeed.

How Can You Get Involved?

There are so many ways you can be part of the change. Whether you’re volunteering your time on the construction site, donating goods to the ReStore, or simply shopping for a great deal, your contribution makes a meaningful impact. Every action, big or small, helps us continue building affordable homes and creating stronger communities for families in need.

At Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity, we know that decent shelter is not just a luxury—it’s a fundamental right. By partnering with us, you can help us make that right a reality for local families. Together, we can build homes, build community, and build hope. Visit the Habitat ReStore, volunteer your time, or make a donation to support our mission.

Every little bit helps. Together, we can make a lasting difference!
