Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity

From 1994 to 2024, this Habitat affiliate has built, rehabilitated, or recycled homes with 30 low-income, first-time homebuyers living in less than desirable situations. Families partner with our affiliate through our homeownership program to build their homes alongside staff and volunteers. Habitat homebuyers also participate in pre-mortgage financial and homebuyer education. These program requirements create sustainable homeownership opportunities and strong, stable homes. Once the home is purchased, Habitat homeowners pay an affordable mortgage, providing a decent place to live while creating a situation where homeowners can save more, allowing them to pursue meaningful opportunities and gain financial stability.

A Brush With Kindness

In late 2010, Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity began a home repair program called A Brush With Kindness (ABWK) where income-qualified homeowners pay for materials only and the affiliate provides both staff and volunteer labor free of charge. Through November 2024, ABWK has 106 home repair projects under its belt and 66 more projects have been successfully referred to the appropriate contractor, helping low-income homeowners to continue living in their homes.

Healthy Homes

In May 2024, Newberg Habitat launched the Healthy Homes Repair Program in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Oregon. Utilizing funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Newberg Habitat is able to provide healthy home repairs for income-qualified homeowners at no charge to the homeowner. The Healthy Homes program allows families and individuals to remain in their homes, age in place, and enjoy increased livability.

The ReStore

Additionally, Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity operates a home improvement resale store, the “ReStore”, which collects community donations of home goods, appliances, and building materials. The ReStore sells the donated goods at a discounted price, helping community members to access home improvement materials at affordable prices while supporting affiliate programs.

Does Habitat for Humanity give houses away?

No. Habitat builds homes for qualified buyers who pay an affordable monthly mortgage. These mortgage payments then help Habitat build more homes for low-income buyers in the community.

Does Habitat for Humanity International provide funding for local builds?

No. Many believe Habitat for Humanity International helps fund construction of homes built through local Habitat affiliates, but that is not the case. Our affiliate is responsible for raising its own funds through grants, donations, sponsorships, fundraising, and ReStore sales.

Can I donate to a local building project through Habitat for Humanity International?

Yes, but note that Habitat International takes a percentage of each donation designated for Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity, so we don’t receive the full amount. If you want your donation to support the Newberg Area Habitat directly, please donate to us directly.

How long does the homeownership process take?

The application process generally takes 3-6 months, followed by an 8-12 month period for fulfilling the sweat equity requirement. Overall, it typically takes 12-18 months from the time the application is submitted to completing the mortgage closing process. What if I am not approved for homeownership?

If your application makes it through initial criteria, but you are not selected for homeownership by the Family Selection Committee, in addition to the letter of explanation you will receive an invitation to apply again during future application rounds.

Is there a limit to how many times I can apply?

Though you may apply only once per application round, there is no limit on how many times you can apply for a Habitat home.
